I wanted to share this with you, isn’t it just stunning! Considered the most impressive opal ever discovered, just 6cm long and valued at $1 million, awash with blazing fire and light.
So special that it has its very own name – the Virgin Rainbow. It was found in the capital of opals, Coober Pedy in 2003. A brilliant (excuse the pun) example of an opalised fossil, dating back to when dinosaurs roamed the world and much of inland Australia was a giant seascape. As of September it will be on display at South Australian Museum. If you are in the area you should definitely drop in and have a look. They have put together a new exhibition of some of the most beautiful opals ever unearthed, some set and others still in their natural state.
If you love opals, but don’t have a lazy mil hanging around, you might want to have a look at our collection of boulder opals from Lightening Ridge. Called boulder opals because they are found in large Ironstone boulders. Beautiful veins of light and colour running through the dark brown coloured rock. Boulder Opal is becoming more and more sought after due to its beauty and the stability of the gemstone itself. The more crystal opal visible the higher the cost, more ironstone the lower the price – what a surprise though when you catch the gorgeous colour glinting through.
